Ink used in most inkjet printers is mostly water soluble so you can remove its stains from clothing. If you manage to accumulate ink blot at home, remove the garment clean it immediately. Treat white fabric with a solution of bleach and cold water before putting it in laundry whereas for coloured clothes, just do it with cold water and lathery ammonia. You can easily remove most of the stains following the trick but when out of home like in office, dealing with printer ink blots is rather a different situation.

Remove as much as possible

The moment stain occurs, dab it immediately with a moist paper towel and remove as much ink a possible. Remember; you’re to dab the ink, not rub or else it’ll spread all over the fabric. When done, let the stain air dry.

Sandwich the blot

When at home and able to change your clothes; remove the inked garment and drench the stain with hair spray or rub small fraction of alcohol. Once damped, press the blot gently between two paper towels placed on either side of the fabric. Put some pressure on the towel on the back of stained cloth, forcing the spot on towel’s front. This way, you can lift as much of it as possible.

Expert tip

Move or change the towels frequently with this ensuring that you’ve a clean work surface always. You simply don’t want the ink pressing back into the garment after removal. The trick usually work with most of printer ink stains but not all as some use pigment-based inks that are much tough to eliminate. Acetone based nail polish remover works here but one should always test it on a separate piece of fabric thus preventing damage to standard clothing! Consult a professional cleaning service if spot remains.

Pre-treatment

It’s an old trick but works most of the time! Pour a drop or two of liquid detergent onto the stain and gently rub the spot with moist, old yet clean toothbrush until it works into lather. Carefully soak in water and the stain is likely to be gone.

Rinse the fabric
After pre-treatment, wash the piece of stained cloth in cold water. After cleaning, lay the garment flat, allow it to air dry or blow with hairdryer. If you still see the mark, pre-treat and wash again however it’s better if you take it to a professional dry-clean service.

Caution

Don’t treat ink stain with hot water or it’ll set the mark permanently! Wash with cold, tap water!

Effective antidote for;
  • Light stain
    Light ink blot can be from newspaper or pen which you can remove without excess chemical treatment. Simply take a cotton swab, dip lightly in alcohol and rub gently. It’s likely to take the ink however if it doesn’t come up initially, put some pressure to bleed it out of the fabric.
  • Deep stains
    This usually requires more household cleaning mixtures for maximum cleaning. Homemade solution is usually made of liquid detergent, water and alcohol. Being porous, you’ve to handle them carefully without bucketing in excess amount or it’ll ruin the entire fabric. Put a few drops of solution on the mark and place paper towels on either side to absorb ink as much as possible. Whatever remains, wash with usual cleaning agents or take them to a professional laundry service.
  • Glycerine & detergent mix
    Another way to rid ink from clothes on your own is with glycerine and detergent. Again, take cotton swab and dab it gently in glycerine, rub lightly and if it doesn’t work, particular hair-sprays would do as well. Wash the garment in detergent mixed cold water in the end.
